villa torre a cona

THE HISTORY

Fattoria Torre a Cona is part of the historical treasure in a territory that can trace its history to ancient times.

Rignano sull'Arno, the beautiful region where the Villa is located, dates back to the Etruscans.
Set in a favourable position because of the convenient crossing of the Arno River at that point,
this has always been considered a strategic site for establishing settlements.
According to some scholars the name probably derives from the Latin "Arinianum", which would indicate that the first stable settlement in the area dates back to Roman times. In 180 A.D.
the consul Lucio Cassio, named the Etruscan road that crossed the area, "Cassia Vetus".

la storia della Fattoria

Fattoria Torre a Cona, an outstanding architectural masterpiece, traces it roots back to ancient times.
The first documented evidence concerning the existence of the estate dates back to 1066 A.D. However, it was not in its present form, but was known as the castle of Quona.
Completely razed to the ground, except for the large 12th century tower, it was rebuilt by Marquis Rinuccini in the 18th century.
The Rinuccinis were an old aristocratic Florentine family, who had made a fortune in commerce. Several members of the family were renowned in cultural fields: especially Ottavio Rinuccini, the 16th century librettist who wrote "Dafne" and "Il ballo delle ingrate" for the two famous composers Jacopo Peri and Claudio Monteverdi.
The building was extended and soon became one of the most sumptuous among the great Italian villas of the 18th century.
In 1748, the Rinuccini family sold their estate to Marquis Trivulzio of Milan, who sold it to Baron Padoa, in 1882.
The estate finally changed hands for the last time in 1937,
when it was purchased by Count Rossi di Montelera.

THE ESTATE PARK

The estate also famous for the extensive gardens surrounding the Villa.
The gardens were laid out between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century in a geometrical diamond configuration with alleys and paths leading out through the park.
Allegorical and mythological statues by Giuseppe Cantini are scattered throughout the gardens
where the paths cross.
